As we enter that time of year when lice outbreaks can become more common, it's important to be proactive in preventing their spread. With children shedding layers of clothing and piling them up around the field during recess, Extended Day programs, Boys & Girls Club activities, sports events, and other gatherings, lice can easily find ways to hitch a ride.
Here are some helpful tips to reduce the risk of spreading lice:
1. **Avoid Head-to-Head Contact**: Encourage your child to avoid direct head-to-head contact during play and other activities at home, school, or elsewhere (sports activities, playground, slumber parties, camp).
2. **Do Not Share Personal Items**: Teach your child not to share personal items such as hats, scarves, coats, hair ribbons, or barrettes. Also, avoid sharing combs, brushes, or towels.
3. **Keep Hair Tied Back**: If possible, keep long hair tied back or in braids to reduce the chance of lice crawling onto your child’s hair.
4. **Regularly Clean Personal Items**: Wash coats, bed linens, and cloth hair accessories regularly. It may also help to vacuum floors and furniture where hair might settle.
5. **Routine Head Checks**: Conduct regular head checks at home to catch lice early before they spread in your household.
6. **Educate Your Child**: Discuss lice openly with your child so that they know what to look for and can report any itching or unusual scalp sensations promptly.
